Yes, I had to succumb - still so many more states to visit!

The week that was.
Today, I get to go to another funeral. I don’t like going to these things but I heard this passage on NPR awhile back and it summed up things rather well and I think since I heard it I have tried to take those words to heart:
In this instance, I think it is a situation that underlines those sentiments. The person who passed was someone who I never really understood (neither of us spoke a common language) but, the family that survives is important to me. I go to try and be there for them.
It’s been a bad week in that way - I came into the week finally getting a project finished, a project that had consumed all my waking moments for the preceding several days as I tried to figure out the design problems it presented. I am happy with the end result but, after finishing one of these projects, I find it akin to eating a large meal in that I want to push myself away from the table and take a nap (even if only a figurative one) and have a day or two of getting back to normal.
I didn’t have that chance this week.
When I got into the week, already drained and found myself with committments on my time, I just wound up playing catch up over the next few days. The beginning of the week was supposed to be relagated to working on site for a long term client and as the week progressed it just didn’t happen because of one reason or another. I did wind up being there one day but, it was a brutally long day and I found myself walking back in my door after midnight.
Ah, and then there is the phantom stone. I am trying to figure if I passed a stone yesterday or if I was the recepient of some middle of the night kitty trampoline jumping. All I know is I am still sore on one side.
Still with everything that went on, the week was good. I’ve had better weeks and I’ve had worse but, I am coming to the conclusion that how I approach the world has as much to do with how bad things get as any external event.
Today, I get to go to another funeral. I don’t like going to these things but I heard this passage on NPR awhile back and it summed up things rather well and I think since I heard it I have tried to take those words to heart:
“Always go to the funeral” means that I have to do the right thing when I really, really don’t feel like it. I have to remind myself of it when I could make some small gesture, but I don’t really have to and I definitely don’t want to. I’m talking about those things that represent only inconvenience to me, but the world to the other guy. You know, the painfully under-attended birthday party. The hospital visit during happy hour. The Shiva call for one of my ex’s uncles. In my humdrum life, the daily battle hasn’t been good versus evil. It’s hardly so epic. Most days, my real battle is doing good versus doing nothing.
In this instance, I think it is a situation that underlines those sentiments. The person who passed was someone who I never really understood (neither of us spoke a common language) but, the family that survives is important to me. I go to try and be there for them.

Pssst...
Hey. C’mere.
Just between you and I, while there are a lot of people raging against the guy, will you admit how irrelevant the President is in our lives?
I seem to see a lot of electronic ink devoted to the topic regularly. Anger, anger, anger all directed at Alfred E. President but, I get the feeling sometimes like the nation is just holding its breath waiting for the next election to roll around so we can put this 8 years behind us.
8 years, wow!
Between Bush the senior, Clinton and Bush the Jr. that’s 20 years of my life gone. It’s hard to sometimes imagine a generation is coming of age and that is all they have known. Stop for a second and really give that some thought if you will. If a person was born in 1988 all they have known is a Bill sandwiched between a lot of Bush - seems like a healthy stripper metaphor is in there.
Even if they were born say around ’84, they can’t really have very clear memories of anyone before those three.
I imagine age gives you perspective, the first guy I can really remember was Nixon and I have vague memories of Johnson and his veep Humphrey (who ran against Tricky Dick in ’68). I survived Ford and Carter though both of whom I remember quite well and of course, Ronnie Rocket.
What I wonder about right now is the wave of nostalgia twenty years hence for the ‘good old days’ of the decade just after the millennium. It’s only in looking back we get a sense of the events we have lived through, we never seem able to recognize those trends while we are living them. What will the focus be on I wonder?
In the meantime, will somebody tell me why, oh why we are having debates between prospective candidates 15 to 16 months before any actual election takes place? By focusing so readily on the next presidential race, aren’t we in fact giving a pass to the people who are in office now in both the Executive and Legislative branches of government? Am I the only one who thinks this sideshow devoted to figuring out who the horses will be in the next Presidential race only serves to distract the country from taking care of the things it needs to address today?

Works for me.
Of course since it is from the Onion one has to suppose it is hardly true although one can hope.
Commissioner Bud Selig announced Wednesday that, once the Giants slugger retires, his name in the official MLB record books will be forever accompanied by an asterisk, followed by a pound sign and exclamation point, all preceded by the letter ‘F’—a string of characters that, according to Selig, “will always be associated with Barry Bonds.”

Update.
I made an earlier remark about the redesign of Mike Wieringo’s site and surprisingly enough the top banner has since been changed.* It certainly looks a helluva lot nicer and is more in keeping with the style and character a guy who makes his living as a penciller (although I am somewhat mystified by the plural internet[s]). I still think the thing (header) is way too big.
What’s funny is there is a column for “ART,” that seems like it would lend itself to small sized versions of the draw to Mike’s site - the daily sketch. Linked to the larger versions he normally posted in the body of his old design would seem to be a good solution. I can’t help but think, taking the sketches out of the body of his blogging (text) would at least give some of what he writes an equal amount of significance. Even though I do visit to see his sketches I do enjoy reading what he has to say as well.
I guess it may be a work in progress, we’ll see. Also, he‘s got a Flickr stream up with color work (linked from his website) and the color stuff is just out and out spectacular, really worth a look!
*Further update - it appears the site has three rotating banners. I imagine it’s a question of waiting for the one to take precedence. Still thinking how the navigation isn’t as good as it used to be though.

A Monday roundup.
Looking through the traffic reports for the blog is always somewhat interesting.
I endeavor to be an equal opportunity offender. What I mean to say is, I think I am most successful if I can generate traffic across a broad spectrum of opinion and views. It won’t feel like I’ve totally arrived until I can get Warren Ellis to resume answering my emails (or at the very least link to me). Even getting Peter David to link here would be something of a victory (at least he does answer emails).
Fortunately people do link here and they get scads more traffic than my lonely corner of the internet could ever hope to generate. Even though I got dropped from Cherry Bomb’s selected set of links, sweet, sweet Alix (of We Could Be Naked) links here.
I even got a nice mention by Elayne in her blog this week for something I wrote, being linked to is an incredible measure of flattery (really!). That two people of disparate outlooks on life would link here is to me something even more of a victory because regardless of our differences we are united in the things we like more.
Some other things which are of note of late:
Vinnie shut down his blog for the summer and while it’s understandable (him wanting to take a break), it’s still disappointing because looking at his work is such a treat.
Mike Wieringo redesigned his website (and I still haven’t made the grade there linkwise).
In the process of redesigning though things have grown more cluttered (although his drawing is still a treat to look at). I don’t know what it is about it but, I liked some of the icons for his old site much better. Perhaps because the iconography for the old site was so uniquely his and didn’t look as generic as the new design does.
I looked again and realized too that it was a couple of things including the type treatment (having the top banner dominate much of the space above the fold). It’s one of those situations where you know criticism isn’t really welcome as much as fawning adoration but, I’ve included a link to show what I’m talking about. If you click through you see how the page comes up on my computer (and I’m using a big monitor) suffice to say it’s just a poor page layout.
(Just one more thing to put me on Mike’s sh*tlist)
Danielle Corsetto is trying to generate enough cash through donations to do Girls Without Slingshots five days a week. I just keep hoping she can find a print outlet for her work which will essentially achieve the same goal.

If you’re going to do something...
Do it right! If you haven’t seen this, you can be treated to the mother of all baseball manager tantrums. I imagine he didn’t like a call, the sense I get is the home plate umpire had a varying strike zone. Lou Pinella better watch out because there is a challenger to his title as baseball’s most fiery manager:

In case you missed it.
I managed to see Paul Newman live in one of his last stage performances as the stage manager in Our Town at the Westport Community Playhouse and seeing one of our nation’s great actors close up in such a small venue in one of American Theater’s standards was nothing less than a tremendous treat.
It’s too bad Newman has decided to stop acting but understandable - he’s leaving big footprints behind for today’s actors to follow in though.
“You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me,” he said, referring to his screen acting career.
“I’m grateful for the other things that have come into my life,” he added.

Jeffrey DeMunn, Jayne Atkinson and Frank Converse have been confirmed for the cast of the Westport Country Playhouse revival of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. They join the already-announced Paul Newman and Jane Curtin. James Naughton will direct the starry group.
The production will run June 5-22.
Curtin will play one of the four parents of the story’s central teenage sweethearts. Beyond "Saturday Night Live," Curtin is known for the sitcoms “Kate & Allie” and “Third Rock from the Sun” and an occasional stage turn in plays such as Love Letters.

Masturbation and you.
You know when I was younger, I honestly thought there would come a day when I wouldn’t get horny. Actually, it was more that I thought I wouldn’t get as horny. The years have passed and the feeling doesn’t ever really go away. I wonder why that is sometimes, this tendency towards self abuse whose pull is so powerful (you know it wasn’t until I reread that I realized the horrible pun contained within).
Woody Allen said (in Annie Hall): Don’t knock masturbation — it’s sex with someone I love. As much as that may be true, I can’t help but feel I could put my time to better use though. If I somehow took all the time I have spent throughout my life “milking the lizard” as it has colorfully been referred to among friends and devoted the same amount of time to one of life’s great puzzles or some other problem that confronted humanity I think I would be famous by now and our collective lot would be a better one.
I don’t think Albert Einstein masturbated.
Well, actually I think he might have masturbated once but, just once and he had a really good orgasm and after that figuring it would tough to follow that up he just abstained. Hence we have E=Mc2.
Stephen Hawkins probably isn’t able to masturbate himself and look at what he’s able to come up with. Yes, if it wasn’t for masturbation we would be flying to the stars!
The reason I bring this up was because of a discussion I was having with someone today. The person was mentioning during the course of the conversation seeing an ad for Enzyte or some such other concoction guaranteed to give you a woody that could crack concrete.
If you not familiar with the Enzyte campaign (I don’t know maybe you’ve lived in a cave for the last few years), it has the ubiquitous Bob in each ad who goes everywhere with the same vacant smile plastered on his face (due to his constant state of arousal no doubt). The ad always extols the great virtues of Bob’s prowess when it comes to getting a boner and how he is the envy of his friends and neighbors. They go on to say how Bob’s wife is really happy but, I can’t help but think if Bob has been married for 10 or more years, she’s not so much happy because Bob has a boner as much as she is because she’s doing the pool boy on the side.
We spend a lot of time in this country focused on stiff dicks.
Besides the people in government.
In addition to Enzyte, you’ll see the campaign for Viagra too. More talk about a hard man being good to find. Thing is, we spend so much time focused on this nowadays, our obsession as a nation stands in marked contrast to our nation’s determination to put a man on the moon in the sixties. Yes instead of lifting our gaze skyward and pondering new vistas to explore, our country is pulling its pants out at the waist, discretely checking to see if we’re hard and wondering why we’re not if we’re not.
The funny thing about Viagra is they speak about one of the side effects being blindness.
Well, D’uh!
I mean I can remember my mother telling me for years I would go blind.

It’s out on DVD now and I have to say I highly recommend it. I keep hoping it will make it to a regular series but seeing as how Peter Krauss is part of the cast on a new ABC show slated for the fall, it looks unlikely. Still it’s one of the more entertaining things I’ve seen over the last few months.

It’s like poetry.
You can’t make this stuff up. Nobody can turn a phrase like Al Goldstein.
It’s like being with a hooker when she asks if I want to pay another $100 for her to lick my asshole. Of course I am going to say yes. I guess that’s why my kitchen is filled with useless as-seen-on-TV Garlic Presses and Hot Dog Toasters that do not work.

Kitty math.
Maybe it seems a bit stupid but, when I wake up in the morning I have a small bundle of fur curled up beside me (or on top of me). If I just look over at the bundle it is enough to elicit a reaction and a head turn in my direction to see if I have opened my eyes.
Then, the purring starts. It is loud, so very loud the purring, and seems unending.
If I lie back and prompt it by tapping upon my chest slowly, hesitantly the fur bundle will crawl up on top of me and get comfortable. It is a dangerous moment in the day because the small, radiantly warm package purring away atop me can be enough to lure me back into the world of dreamland once more.
I lie there on the precipice of the day and my mind is gloriously free of all worry as my focus is only on the delicious heat and soothing noise coming from this little being perched on me. Sometimes I do fall back asleep, only to wake hours later with my companion still in the same position but, if the urgency of the day seizes me, after some perfunctory petting, all I need do is make it apparent with some minor urging and she alights from me and says good morning in the unfathomable language of the feline.
I am followed to the kitchen as we both make our journey into the land of wakening.
Breakfast follows, more petting and purring. There is some exploring which needs to be done to see if the house has undergone some serious transformation since its last inspection. All this needs to be fit in before the after breakfast nap.
The thing that amazes me is how such a little creature can fill the beginning of my day with such an abundance of joy, truly one of the most remarkable equations of kitty math.

Is this indicative of a wave of change?
I saw this news article about a book burning and had to pass it along. Makes me think in some ways of Fahrenheit 451 although it is less about censorship and more about subtle changes occurring in society:

“This is the funeral pyre for thought in America today,” Wayne told spectators outside his bookstore as he lit the first batch of books.
The fire blazed for about 50 minutes before the Kansas City Fire Department put it out because Wayne didn’t have a permit for burning.
Speaking of.
Al Goldstein, I did some poking around and found his blog! It is definitely a must-read as Al hasn’t lost any of the piss and vinegar that made him so entertaining!

The arrogance of the new generation, with their new tech breakthroughs, is astonishing. Like assholes, everyone these days has a blog and an opinion. People with no knowledge or expertise on anything pontificate about everything. Just because you have a website doesn’t mean you know anything other than you should wipe your ass after you take a shit – and I believe many of these tech-yuppies forget to do that. It is the blind leading the blind, the ignorant leading the ignorant, and this is what our government is based on. How did George W. Bush become president when he never went to a foreign country? His advisors were as dumb and provincial as he is.
And you bloggers are equally as dumb. Why do you lay upon us your ignorance, your pomposity and conceit? I want to learn from an expert, from an authority, those who know more than me. I am not interested in learning from you vermin. It would be like you trying to teach me how to eat pussy when I had sex with over 7000 women. You have had five and had to pay for each of them. It’s a world with no criteria, evaluation or grades. These people who are telling us what to think believe that the world is flat and women are afraid of sex. They are trying to interpret a world they do not and cannot understand.
You SUCK!
I order stuff online, I don’t have any trepidation about it anymore and for the most part I’ve had pretty decent experiences. Last month I spent an inordinate amount of time straightening out a royal f**k up by Amazon but, I’ll give them credit, they really did go out of their way to placate me for bad service.
I ordered a ladder through Amazon, got a decent price (even though I found it for cheaper later), waited for the thing to come... and waited... and waited. It showed up as having shipped but the thing was it wasn’t coming through UPS, FedEx or USPS. Amazon had to send it through some freight shipper and they were just clowns, there’s no other way to put it.
The thing wound up out at JFK a day or two after leaving Ohio and then you couldn’t get through to these people. If you didn’t call them after 9am or before 5pm you were sh*t out of luck and even during business hours there were times the phone would just go unanswered, add to the fact they didn’t have any kind of voicemail. It just goes on and on and on and I would rather not even get into what it took to get this whole thing straightened out.
I wound up sending a few emails to Amazon and speaking to some people over there (as I said the shipper was just useless) and they really did try very hard to make things right. As it wound up they reimbursed me for shipping and refunded a good portion of the cost of the ladder so I wasn’t in a position to complain. Well, maybe I was in a position to complain but, you could see they were really trying and I appreciated they kicked back the money they did to compensate for the aggravation.
Recently I ordered some books (comic books) through another website. I know they do a lot of business on eBay and I believe I even bought something from them on eBay about 7 years ago but, this is the first time I’ve ever ordered anything directly from their site - I ordered the thing as a preorder, two months before the book came out. I didn’t even think too much about it until the other day when I got an email saying the things were shipping. A few days later I went to pick up my mail and found a flat there waiting for me (among other things), I opened the flat up later on when I got home. There was an invoice in the envelope and some other promotional material but the books I had ordered weren’t in the envelope. Just an invoice (packing slip) and this other crap.
I sent the people an email - they said they would refund my money but, it wasn’t the money I wanted, I paid for the books. Of course in the interim they said they no longer had any stock on the books. I won’t dignify them by providing a link to their site but I certainly won’t order from them ever again. In the meantime, if I had just used the local guy I usually go to I would have gotten the book but I figured since they are the distributor of choice for Dark Horse I was guaranteed getting the book(s).
So, in the spirit of the old Al Goldstein moments on Midnight Blue, F*CK YOU TFAW.COM. Though your website states: Welcome. You've arrived at the best online store for comic books, manga, anime and pop culture collectibles! The truth is you really must be from another world if you’re buying into your own hype because your service leaves plenty to be desired.
